Natural & Synthetic thickeners
In water based paints, thickeners are used to give consistency and rheology control, to prevent sagging and settling of pigments and extenders, to improve the pigments dispersion, to improve the paint stability, to prevent coagulation and flocculation and to control the wet edge time.
The most important thickeners used in latex paints are modified natural polysaccharides and water soluble synthetic thickeners
Modified natural polysaccharides
Lamberti manufactures and trades two different range of polysaccharide derivatives:
ESACOL® and CARBOCEL
ESACOL® is the trade name of a range of nonionic etherified polysaccharides proposed as valuable replacement to HEC. These polymers of high molecular weight and pseudoplastic rheological behaviour show excellent features as thickening additives for water based architectural paints, wet plasters, adhesives. For paint manufacturing Lamberti has developed the ESACOL® ED range, surface treated to obtain delayed hydration and consequently dispersibility enhancement, avoiding lumps formation. ESACOL’s solutions are clear and protected to bacteria attack, however standard preservation is recommended. CARBOCEL range show excellent water solubility, good biostability and pseudoplastic rheology during the application. In practice, the above properties allow the partial or total replacement of cellulose ethers like hydroxy ethyl cellulose with a remarkable economic advantage.
CARBOCEL RANGE
|
Carboxy-methyl-cellulose grades | CARBOCEL range shows excellent solubility in water and pseudoplastic rheology during the application.
These properties allow the partial or total replacement of cellulose ethers such as hydroxy ethyl cellulose, mainly for interior application, with a remarkable economic advantage. |
ESACOL RANGE
|
thickeners with controlled hydration, specific for latex paint formulations | As thickeners and rheology modifiers Esacol ED provide thickening efficiency, stabilization, ease of processing. Rheology modifiers, or thickeners, are very important in paint manufacture. They influence the paint’s behaviour during all stages of processing manufacture, storage and application.
The principal functional properties of thickeners in latex paints are:
• VISCOSITY INCREASE
• RHEOLOGY CONTROL
• STABILISATION
• WATER RETENTION

Synthetic thickeners
Synthetic thickeners manufactured by Lamberti are traded under the name VISCOLAM.
VISCOLAM acrylic thickeners can be used in combination each other or with ESACOL® thickeners or with cellulose ethers to achieve a specific rheological behaviour of paints. Their main properties are due to:
• ease of incorporation, as they are supplied in liquid form
• much better resistance to bacteria degradation
• cost reduction, relatively to their best thickening effect
VISCOLAM PS polyether polyurethane thickeners can be used in combination with all the other classes of natural or synthetic thickeners. Their main properties are due to
• excellent brushability, levelling and spatter resistance
• excellent gloss development
• no sensitive to pH variation (3 - 12)

VISCOLAM PS 166
|
Nonionic water soluble polyurethane | proposed as thickener in glossy water thinnable enamels, emulsion paints, etc., where, in combination with cellulose ethers and /or polyacrylic thickeners, gives better flowing, levelling and antispattering performance |
VISCOLAM PS 167
|
Nonionic water soluble polyurethane | proposed as thickener in glossy water thinnable enamels, emulsion paints, etc., where, in combination with cellulose ethers and /or polyacrylic thickeners, gives better flowing, levelling and antispattering performance |
