Microbiology Lab

Excellence in Product Safety and Compliance

Founded in 2007 in Albizzate, the Lamberti Microbiology Laboratory was originally established as an extension of our biotechnology lab. Its primary mission has always been to ensure the microbiological safety and quality of our finished products, particularly those in the Personal Care sector.

From the outset, our work focused on microbiological quality control to detect pathogenic microorganisms and confirm compliance with customer specifications. Over time, the laboratory’s scope expanded significantly—both in volume and in the diversity of services offered. Today, we play a key role in supporting R&D across all Business Units, especially during the development of new products. Our efforts help ensure that all formulations are microbiologically stable and safe throughout their lifecycle.

Preservative Selection

One of the laboratory’s critical contributions lies in evaluating product susceptibility to microbial contamination and, crucially, in selecting the most appropriate preservative systems. This task requires in-depth knowledge of:

Application-specific microbial risks

Global and national regulatory requirements

Consumer safety standards

While many in the market claim to provide microbiological testing, not all competitors possess the expertise to choose preservatives that are not only effective and safe, but also fully compliant with ever-evolving regulations. Nor do they offer the technical know-how for remediation in case of contamination—such as cleaning and restoring production lines—an area where Lamberti has proven competence.

The need for this expertise has grown in recent years. On one hand, there’s increasing demand for more sustainable, water-based formulations—naturally more susceptible to microbial growth. On the other hand, stricter regulations now limit the range of preservatives allowed in formulations. Identifying safe, effective, and approved preservatives is no longer optional; it’s a critical factor in product development, where Lamberti stands apart.

Beyond Product Formulation

Beyond Product Formulation

Our capabilities extend beyond product formulation. We also monitor hygiene across Lamberti’s production facilities, ensuring a clean environment and hygienic processes—both essential for maintaining microbiological product quality.

In line with growing demands, our laboratory underwent a structural upgrade in 2024. The reorganization includes two dedicated areas: one for the preparation and storage of sterile culture media, and another for conducting microbiological analyses. Two Class II biosafety cabinets ensure that high-risk procedures—such as viability testing for biopesticides and Personal Care analyses—are performed in isolated, controlled environments, minimizing cross-contamination risks.

We’ve also expanded into the AgriChemicals sector, where our lab supports the growing interest in biopesticides—environmentally friendly microbial alternatives to synthetic pesticides. In partnership with the Agrochemical Business Unit, we test the compatibility of Lamberti's adjuvants with microbial biopesticides, ensuring that our chemical formulations do not compromise microbial viability.
